RM: First of all, Who is Sophia Bolinder?
Sophia: Sophia Bolinder is a Swedish upcoming R&B/Soul/Pop singer who loves music!
RM: Congratulations on the release of “Under The Stars”! How did the idea for this romantic R&B duet come about?
Sophia: Thank you so much! I basically have always wanted to make a song like this, since I have always been a huge fan of soul and R&B. Me and my producer, the amazingly talented John Soul, chose a beat together and then it all evolved so naturally. I wanted an authentic touch with not too many extra effects that would ruin that feeling.
RM: Can you tell us about your journey in music and what led you to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter?
Sophia: I have wanted to sing, write, and produce music since I was a very young child. Music has always been my biggest joy and safe space, something I always can return to, the place where I feel “at home”. When I was younger, as a teenager, I started to produce my own songs, mostly pop but also EDM, which I am also a big fan of. Then I became an adult and started studying something else than music. But it has always been in the back of my mind. I was so happy when I found my current producer who, besides being a natural talent shared a lot of the same taste in music.
RM: “Under The Stars” features a soft and sexy R&B intro. What was the creative process like for this track, and how did you achieve that specific sound?
Sophia: Since I have always been a huge fan of soft soul songs, this was what we were hoping to achieve. Me and my producer chose a beat together and then it was mostly my producer John Soul who wrote the melody. Then I came up with additional ideas in lyrics and in the composition of the song.
RM: This is your second collaboration with John Soul. What makes your musical chemistry so special, and what was it like working together again?
Sophia: I think the foundation is that we are two individuals who love music and soul music specifically! I believe you only can create great things if you truly love what you do. I think what makes our collaborations so great is that we are pretty clear about where our strengths lie.
RM: You’ve cited Toni Braxton and Usher as influences. In what ways did they shape your sound on this track?
Sophia: Yes, I think both are great artists with very significant voices and sounds. You can always hear that it’s them in their songs, and they always give so much soul and depth in their work, I think.
RM: “Under The Stars” has a nostalgic feel reminiscent of late 90s and early 2000s R&B. Why did you choose to tap into that specific era for inspiration?
Sophia: I think A LOT of great soul and R&B music was made during this time, and it’s nostalgic because I was myself an early teenager in the early 2000’s and it was in a lot of ways the golden era for R&B. I believe we need to bring that great vibe back!
RM: How do you balance honoring the classics of R&B while also injecting your own modern and personal style?
Sophia: I think by trying to keep the vibe and general sound but still want to feel fresh and modern. Of course, having a great producer helps as well.
RM: What can fans expect next from you after this release—more singles, an EP, a tour?
Sophia: There are new singles coming soon!
