DEELA Doubles Down With ‘DEY PLAY!’ and ‘Gbona’

Nigerian-British rapper DEELA continues her impressive run with the release of her latest double single, “DEY PLAY!” and “Gbona,” two bold records that further establish her as one of the most exciting voices emerging from the global African music scene.

Arriving after a standout period that included supporting Amaarae at her London and Paris shows, as well as collaborating with Little Simz on the surprise EP SUGAR GIRL, the two-track release captures DEELA’s fearless confidence while showcasing the versatility that has become her trademark.

Leading the release is “DEY PLAY!”, an unapologetic anthem built around swagger, resilience, and unwavering self-belief. Borrowing its title from a popular expression used to dismiss negativity and unwanted attention, the track sees DEELA effortlessly brush aside distractions with sharp lyricism, commanding delivery, and undeniable boss energy.

Its companion record, “Gbona”—the Yoruba word for “hot” or “heat”—takes a more introspective approach. Blending English, Nigerian Pidgin, and Yoruba, the song reflects on the determination, confidence, and inner fire that continue to fuel her journey. Anchored by infectious production and motivational themes, “Gbona” serves as an anthem for anyone determined to overcome obstacles and pursue their ambitions.

Born and raised in Lagos before relocating to England at the age of 11, DEELA has built an artistic identity that seamlessly bridges African and British influences. Inspired by everything from Anita Baker and Whitney Houston to Jay-Z and Kanye West, she combines melodic sensibilities with hard-hitting rap, creating a distinctive sound that comfortably blends trap, hip-hop, Afrobeats, and alternative influences.

After earning a degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Manchester, DEELA committed fully to music, steadily building a reputation as one of the UK’s most compelling independent artists. Her growing catalogue has led to collaborations with Flo Milli, Teni, Coco & Clair Clair, and Alté producer Genio Bambino, whose work together helped shape her self-described “Wicked Babe Music” sound before culminating in her 2025 debut mixtape, Wicked.

Already named a 2026 One to Watch by both DAZED and Clash, DEELA continues to gain international recognition through releases such as “Repeat” with South African producer Vanco, while also becoming a familiar presence within fashion circles through collaborations with brands including Sinead Gorey, Di Petsa, and Jeffrey Campbell.

With “DEY PLAY!” and “Gbona,” DEELA delivers another confident statement of intent, blending cultures, languages, and genres into a sound that is uniquely her own. As she continues to expand her presence through high-profile performances and international collaborations, the Nigerian-British rapper is proving she isn’t simply following the next wave of African music—she’s helping define it.
