First of all, Who is Ren Genevieve?

I am a singer/songwriter who loves to tell stories and loves music. I feel that music is a uniquely universal way to connect. There’s something really special about listening to your favorite artist or favourite song and feeling as though they wrote a story directly from your life. It can make you feel seen and less alone in your experiences of the world. I love being a part of this connection as both a music lover and an artist.

“gods to ground” is a departure from your usual songwriting approach. Can you tell us more about how crafting the instrumental first influenced the songwriting process?

I was more focused on communicating an overarching feeling as opposed to telling a narrative, diaristic story. I did have a general idea of the feelings and mood I wanted the song to capture. I wanted it to feel dreamy, fun, confident, and a little mysterious. I used this idea to find sounds that matched the energy of these feelings and crafted lyrics in response to that.

The song captures themes of confidence and self-empowerment. What inspired you to write about these particular themes, and how do they resonate with you personally?

There can be something euphoric in those moments when you do feel really confident and really empowered. I find confidence and self-empowerment really fun to write about because the heights of these feelings are so extreme yet so fleetingI thought it would be fun to capture this in a song!

You mentioned that this song originated from a class assignment. How did that context shape the final version of the song, and what did you learn from the experience?

I learned that I can write and produce really quickly if I have to. HA! In all seriousness, I learned a lot. I was not planning a song for this class assignment, but I really didn’t like what I planned to do for the assignment so I pivoted and wrote this song the night before the assignment was due. I had to work really quickly, and essentially pulled an all-nighter to finish it. I learned that sometimes the pressure of a deadline can push you to try things that are different and get you out of your comfort zone. I didn’t have a lot of time to overthink anything, so I just went with my gut for all of the choices. I kept most of them in the final version. The bones of the song are the same. I re-recorded the vocals and made some minuscule melodic alterations, but it really is the same song that I presented in an 8 or 9 am class!

Your music often reflects personal experiences. How does “gods to ground” fit into your journey of self-discovery and empowerment?

The confidence and self-empowerment I’m describing in the song was something that I had to practice in real time when writing and producing this track. It really reflects me stepping into that empowered and confident part of myself. There was something really freeing about the circumstances of needing to complete this for class pushing me out of my comfort zone in terms of my process. I think it allowed me to be more open to sounds and instruments that I may not have used because I was just looking for sounds that were unique.

“gods to ground” is the second single from your upcoming EP, tongue-tied. What can listeners expect from the EP as a whole, and how does it reflect your growth as an artist?

The EP reflects a lot of my growth as an artist and as a person. I gained a new perspective on what it means to be tongue-tied. I developed a sense of gratitude for these moments because there’s something really beautifully universal in these moments of being tongue-tied. I hope that listeners feel this sense of connection from the EP.

Are there any artists or bands that have influenced your sound?

So many! Some of my biggest music inspirations are Joni Mitchell, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande.

Any mainstream Artist or producer you wish to work with?

YES! Producers wise I would love to work with Max Martin, Ryan Tedder, Dan Nigro, Jack Antonoff. I’m a huge fan of all of their catalogues. They have been a part of some of my favourite records by my favourite artists. It would be an absolute dream to work with them, and learn about their process! I would love to work with SZA – I’ve been playing Lana on repeat lately. I would also love the opportunity to work with Laufey, Olivia Rodrigo, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé. I’m a huge fan of all of their work, and I think it would be super fun to collaborate with them!

What are your plans for the future after the release of tongue-tied? Are there any new directions you’re excited to explore in your music?

I’m always writing! I have a number of songs that I’m working on that will be the basis for my next project. I’m really excited to continue working on that, and see where it goes!
