Oddbox Finds Peace in Letting Go on “never yours to be”

Some relationships leave a lasting impression even when they were never meant to last. On “never yours to be” London-based producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Oddbox explores the quiet heartbreak of accepting that loving someone does not necessarily mean they are yours to keep. Rather than turning that realisation into resentment, the single embraces the possibility of finding peace through letting go.

The track approaches heartbreak as a process of acceptance rather than blame. Its central message recognises that love can be genuine and meaningful without leading to a lasting future together. For anyone who has struggled to move beyond an imagined future with someone, the song offers a reminder that an experience does not have to last forever to have mattered.

Sonically, “never yours to be” unfolds through a haunting, cinematic atmosphere. Delicate piano melodies sit alongside lush synth soundscapes, creating an intimate backdrop for its reflective themes. A saxophone-laced outro adds layer to the arrangement, extending the song’s emotional weight as it moves towards its conclusion. Its sound draws comparisons to the atmospheric songwriting of Patrick Watson and Tom Odell, while maintaining its own identity through its instrumental details.

The lyrics examines how easily people romanticise possibilities that never became reality. The line “You’re like a fantasy, the Ionian kind” captures the distance between an idealised vision of love and the relationship as it actually existed. Rather than simply mourning what has been lost, the song reflects on the imagined future that must also be released when a relationship comes to an end.

For Oddbox, whose real name is Max Burgener, the single marks an important beginning. After more than a decade working as a producer and songwriter, including collaborations with artists such as Jamilah Barry, Saint Raymond, James Hersey and Tay Oskee, he started exploring his own artistic voice through solo releases.

“never yours to be” serves as the first single from his debut EP, Parfois, j’me dis…, released in 2027. The project draws on his varied musical experiences and cultural influences, offering a more personal look at his thoughts, fears and observations about contemporary life.

With “never yours to be” Oddbox turns the difficult act of letting go into a reflective musical experience. Its piano-led intimacy, expansive synth textures and saxophone outro complement a message that feels both painful and liberating: love can be real, even when the person we love was never meant to stay.
