Nia Marie Captures Love and Nostalgia on ‘when the summer ends’

There is something about the end of summer that makes everything feel a little more emotional. The days begin to change, familiar moments become memories, and suddenly you are wondering what comes next. Queens-based singer-songwriter Nia Marie captures that feeling on her latest single, “when the summer ends,” a dreamy Pop/R&B release that connects the changing seasons with the complicated business of love.

Released on September 18, the track finds Nia reflecting on relationships, memories, and the uncertainty that comes with moving into a new chapter. But this is not simply a song about saying goodbye to sunny days. It explores that familiar space between wanting to hold on to something meaningful and recognising that life, much like the seasons, never stays in one place for too long.

What makes the concept work so well is its New York City setting. There is a particular feeling attached to the city as summer fades, and Nia uses that seasonal shift to explore the emotions that come with changing relationships. The result feels personal without being difficult to relate to. Whether you are watching the city transition into autumn or thinking about someone who may no longer be part of your everyday life, there is plenty here to connect with.

Musically, “when the summer ends” leans into a dreamy, soulful atmosphere that perfectly suits its reflective mood. Created alongside longtime collaborator Juan Arango in his Queens home studio, the track draws inspiration from artists such as Olivia Dean, jvke, and Eloise. Those influences helped shape the creative direction, but the song ultimately reflects the feelings and experiences that Nia and Arango brought into the room.

The production gives the song room to breathe, allowing its emotional themes to unfold naturally. Rather than treating the end of summer as a purely sad occasion, the track balances nostalgia with a sense of possibility. Yes, there are memories worth revisiting, and yes, there may be some uncertainty about what lies ahead. But there is also something exciting about making space for whatever comes next.

Nia’s personal approach to songwriting is a big part of what makes the single feel authentic. Its lyrics draw from experiences in her own life, connecting the idea of seasonal change with the ups and downs of romantic relationships. It is that combination of personal reflection and everyday emotion that gives the song its appeal. Sometimes, the end of a season can bring back feelings you thought you had already dealt with, and sometimes a new beginning arrives before you are quite ready for it.

This release also marks another step in Nia’s return to music, following her recent singles “Selfish” and “Let You Go.” Her debut EP, Because You Said I Love You, explored heartbreak, healing, and self-discovery, establishing the emotional honesty that continues to shape her work. With “when the summer ends,” she carries that storytelling approach into a new chapter, pairing soulful vocals with a fresh Pop/R&B sensibility.

Nia’s musical journey began early. Born in Philadelphia, she started making music at six, developing her skills through classical violin and contemporary piano before discovering songwriting at thirteen. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, she continued shaping a sound influenced by legends including Michael Jackson, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, and Stevie Wonder. Now based in Queens, she brings those varied influences into music that balances vulnerability with an accessible, contemporary feel.

Her second collaboration with Arango also highlights the value of a creative partnership that can grow naturally over time. Having worked together before, the pair have found another shared moment worth turning into music, capturing not just a feeling but the atmosphere surrounding it.

Ultimately, “when the summer ends” is the kind of song that belongs on a late-evening playlist, especially when the weather starts changing, and your thoughts begin wandering toward people and moments from the past. It is wistful without getting lost in sadness, romantic without pretending relationships are simple, and hopeful without rushing to provide all the answers.

With this release, Nia Marie turns the end of summer into an invitation to reflect, feel what needs to be felt, and remain open to the next chapter. After all, sometimes the most meaningful goodbyes are also the beginning of something new.
