Mellissa’s Musical Journey Explores Sensuality with ‘Henny Talk’

Ghana’s next-gen Singer, Songwriter, and Producer Mellissa releases new single ‘Henny Talk’ as she continues her musical evolution.

Reflecting a sound she describes as “Afro Sexy”, ‘Henny Talk’ is a sensual offering led by Mellissa’s hypnotic vocals paired with Latin-infused production from Mont Jake. We enter Mellissa’s world as she tells a tale of alcohol-fuelled nights and alter egos that lead to impromptu conversations with her ex. Mellissa’s transparency in her lyrics gives listeners a vulnerable perspective on not allowing your healing process overwhelm you.

Mellissa channels her sensual style in the accompanying video directed by TSE Studios (Lojay, Teni, Bloody Civilian) shot in the tropical landscapes of Nigeria. This month, she immerses herself in London and its culture, including various studio sessions and showcases that began with a standout performance at Clash’s Next Wave event last week.

As a child, Mellissa engaged with music in any way she could. The sounds from her Mother’s restaurant next door to her home began her earliest introduction to music. From the underground gems of Ghana’s Ofori Amponsah and KK Fosu to the legendary sounds of Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys, Mellissa could explore the melange of sounds from Ghana and outside her hometown, too. During her teens, the school choir allowed her to flex her slick vocals while conquering stage fright, allowing her to meet friends with whom she could share her love of music. After completing a film degree in the US, Mellissa began expressing her creativity in different mediums to fuel her competitive energy in every aspect of life.

Mellissa takes inspiration from the sounds of Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America to avoid limiting her sound and express herself most authentically. Collaborations with sister and best friend Moliy and Ajebutter22 introduced her to the world in addition to her standout contribution to Amaarae’s ‘Feel A Way’. A tipping point in her career saw her perform alongside BOJ at his Village Underground performance last summer, followed by compliments from her idol WizKid.

Following the release of her recent single ‘Me & U’ “an anthem for the girls”, Mellissa was announced as Apple Music’s Up Next artist for Ghana and has received championing support across Apple, BBC R1, 1xtra and various community stations. The track was also Eddie Kadi’s Hot Shot track on The Official UK Afrobeats Chart and Afronation’s Spotlight track of the week. With a debut project on the horizon, ‘Henny Talk’ is a statement of intent.
