Lil Wayne, hip-hop royalty and prolific artist, has shed light on the enigmatic process behind his consistently stellar features on other artists’ tracks. In a recent interview with Apple Music, Wayne revealed a surprising detail: he enters a specific “feature mode” that unlocks his ability to deliver exceptional verses.
“When it comes to them verses and them features,” Wayne explained, “I admit there’s a me that I turn on for features that I do not know what the hell goes on. I don’t know that guy, I just know he always comes through.”
This “feature mode” seems almost mythical in its effectiveness. Wayne compares his confidence in his feature-killing abilities to fellow rapper Tyga’s hit-making prowess: “Me featuring on someone’s song and killing the verse is just as sure as this man [Tyga] putting out a hit out. What Snoop said? These mthafckas right here, we don’t miss.”
His statement is supported by a plethora of recent examples. Wayne’s standout verse on Nas’ “Never Die” from “Magic 3” and his contribution to the YG and Tyga track “Brand New” on “Hit Me When U Leave The Klub” are just two testaments to his feature-killing capabilities.
