Canadian Indie pop duo Wotts is back with their latest single, “Wilson,” a track that leans into the nostalgic pop sound that has become their hallmark. Drawing inspiration from acts like Tame Impala and Brothertiger, “Wilson” is the second release from their upcoming EP Good People, Bad People, and it shows that Wotts isn’t afraid to take bold pop risks.
Produced by Jayem, the duo’s vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, “Wilson” aims to be a summer anthem, skillfully blending 80s vibes with contemporary indie pop. Jayem explains, “Since day one we’ve always looked to incorporate ‘timeless sounds’ into our music. Whether it’s pieces of The Smiths for our track ‘Laundry,’ or bits of The Beatles in ‘there,’ we love mixing old with new.” While “Wilson” isn’t directly linked to an older band, it’s heavily inspired by modern artists who proudly wear their influences on their sleeves.
Following the jangly post-punk energy of their previous single “Laundry,” “Wilson” brings a more vibrant pop energy to the table. Despite the shift in tone, the track still manages to weave in some familiar psych-pop touches, giving it that distinctive Wotts sound fans have come to love. As Jayem notes, “We’ve been doing this for two years, and I think we’re starting to settle into a lane. We’ll always be down to throw in something fresh, but we like the idea of having a recognizable sound.”
As anticipation builds for the full EP, Wotts promises a balance of freshness and familiarity. Ricky, the band’s bassist and guitarist, shares, “On our last EP (PETALS), we focused more on telling a cohesive story rather than making sure the sound was consistent. Here we wanted to embrace the best of what we’ve put out to date, while also making sure everything ties together sonically.”
“Wilson” is just the beginning of what’s shaping up to be a busy year for Wotts. With the rest of the EP on the way, music videos in the works, and recording for their first full-length album already underway, Wotts is showing no signs of slowing down. “We’ve never been more excited,” says Jayem. “Here’s hoping people aren’t growing tired of us because we got lots more on the way.”
With their infectious blend of old and new, Wotts continues to carve out a unique space in the indie pop scene. “Wilson” is another strong addition to their growing discography, promising fans a summer full of fresh, memorable tunes.
