Electronic duo UNTER STRØM have unveiled their latest single “Fragment” via renegade label Breathing Records, delivering a powerful fusion of techno, melodic house, industrial textures, and cinematic electronic songwriting.
Formed by Alex Gonzales (Matte Blvck) and John Kunkel (The New Division, John Grand), UNTER STRØM was created from a shared ambition to explore new territory within electronic music. Combining progressive soundscapes, atmospheric production, and club-driven energy, the duo has quickly developed a distinctive identity built around immersive and emotionally charged compositions.
Already earning support from some of electronic music’s biggest tastemakers, including Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy, Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance, Ferry Corsten, and Markus Schulz, UNTER STRØM continues to establish itself as one of the genre’s most exciting emerging acts with the release of their third single, “Fragment.”
Unlike the duo’s first two releases, which were created remotely, “Fragment” represents a major milestone as the first track written entirely together in the same room. During one of their first dedicated writing retreats at Los Angeles’ legendary Sound Factory, Gonzales and Kunkel spent two uninterrupted days focused solely on creating music, free from schedules, expectations, and outside distractions.
Starting with a blank session, the pair allowed ideas to develop naturally, constantly exchanging roles behind the production desk and building the track piece by piece. Rather than following a traditional song structure, they embraced experimentation and instinct, creating a constantly evolving composition that avoids repetition and reflects the freedom at the core of UNTER STRØM’s artistic vision.
Originally intended to remain an exclusive live ID, “Fragment” gradually revealed itself as one of the duo’s most defining creations. Inspired by the creative atmosphere of Sound Factory and shaped by spontaneous collaboration, the track captures the moment UNTER STRØM evolved from a remote creative partnership into a project driven by shared intuition and in-person chemistry.
The single’s detailed production was elevated by an accomplished team, with Aaron Short of The Naked and Famous and So Below handling the mix, while renowned mastering engineer Mike Marsh, whose credits include Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, The Prodigy, and The Chemical Brothers, finalized the record.
With “Fragment,” UNTER STRØM continue to push the boundaries between underground club music and cinematic electronic storytelling, creating a sound that feels both expansive and deeply immersive.
