We caught up with Patti Zlaket to talk about the inspiration behind Dance Again, the unexpected journey that led her back into the studio, the stories behind some of the album’s standout tracks, and what’s next as she takes this remarkable new chapter on the road.
For readers discovering you for the first time, who is Patti Zlaket?
PZ: Wow! Big first question. I guess my short answer is: Patti Zlaket is an artist, dog lover, passionate lawyer, curious creator, and a work in progress.
Congratulations on the release of Dance Again! This is your first new album in two decades. What emotions did you experience when you realized you were finally ready to make another full-length record?
PZ: I was ready. It was a long time coming, and when the time came to do it, I was fired up. The timing was perfect, and I’m glad everything came together when it did.
The title Dance Again feels symbolic. Beyond the music itself, what does it represent for you at this stage of your life and career?
PZ: The song is about making this record, of course, but it’s also about so much more than that. At this time in my life, every moment feels more precious. I don’t want to waste time with worry or doubt or fear about the possibility of failure. I’d rather take my shots and watch what happens. More fun and definitely more interesting.
You have described making this album as “returning home.” What was it about this project that made it feel so deeply personal and fulfilling?
PZ: Music is at my core. Singing is like breathing to me. Diving into this project felt like returning to the thing I love most in the world, and the experience was just waiting for me to embrace it.
The album features an incredible lineup of musicians. What was it like collaborating with such accomplished players, and did any particular recording session leave a lasting impression on you?
PZ: Working with these people, these special people, was a dream. They brought out the very best in me, as an artist and as a collaborator. I feel so fortunate to have been surrounded by musicians who are at the top of their game. They brought me to the top of mine. Our three days in the studio were joyful, stress-free, and life changing. You can’t ask for more than that in a recording session.
Several singles from the album have already connected with listeners, including “Love Is For You,” which earned a place on Apple Music’s New In Rock playlist alongside some legendary names. What did that recognition mean to you?
PZ: To be in the company of some of my all-time favorite artists was thrilling and humbling. That particular track is an old song that finally has a new life, and I’m so glad I can share it now. It’s always been one of my favorites, and its time has apparently come.
After spending years away from releasing new music, did you find that your songwriting had evolved? In what ways has life changed the stories you choose to tell through your songs?
PZ: Every experience I’ve had up to this point – as a musician, a lawyer, a human being – has shaped me and my craft. I have much more to say now, and that is the beauty of time. If you’re paying attention, you will have an endless bounty of material with which to tell stories and make music.
Every song has its own story. Which track on Dance Again came together the quickest, and why did it flow so naturally?
PZ: Once I started working on this project, the songs were flowing out of me. I think the title track came easiest and was one of the first I finished. I’m sure the fact that the song was really born out of the experience I was in helped.
Which song on the album is the most personal to you, and what makes it so meaningful?
PZ: Honestly, the title track wins the day there too. It feels so timely, and I love to sing it. The arrangement and the magic the players brought to the recording is the icing on the cake.
Was there a particular song on Dance Again that was the most challenging to write or record? What made that process different?
PZ: “Love is for You” was a little tricky, in that I didn’t write it as a duet. That was something we decided to do later. I’m so glad we did. Robbie Wyckoff’s vocal and energy on that track is so powerful and gives the song a whole new dimension.
Now that Dance Again is finally out in the world, what do you hope listeners take away from the album after hearing it from beginning to end?
PZ: I hope my music moves listeners the way that my favorite music moves me. And if I have inspired someone to listen to more of my catalog, that’s a bonus. Sharing my songs is the best part of what I do.
With this exciting new chapter underway, what’s next for Patti Zlaket? Can fans expect more new music and live performances in the near future?
PZ: Lots of live shows on the horizon! I get back out on the road with my band (The New Band) in late September. We will be starting in Southern California making our way up the coast.
