Detroit-based rock band Of House delivers a hard-hitting blend of raw energy and introspection with their latest single, “Sunday School.” Released via Underflow Records and available on all major streaming platforms starting December 20, 2024, the track is a gritty, emotionally charged anthem that combines nostalgic rock influences with a modern edge.
Drawing inspiration from the shambolic profundity of The Replacements and the electrifying guitar dynamics of Thin Lizzy, “Sunday School” showcases Of House’s ability to channel classic rock ‘n’ roll energy while carving their own unique sound. The track was inspired by bandleader Nick Van Huis’s experience at a friend’s parent’s funeral, which left him reflecting on his religious upbringing and the ways it shaped—and ultimately conflicted with—his worldview.
“At the funeral, the parishioner only spoke about religion and the deceased’s relationship to God, as if that was all that mattered,” Van Huis shares. “I came away feeling very angry for my friend. I try not to be judgmental—in life or in songwriting—but this message was one I was compelled to deliver.”
Recorded live at Moderate Science in Metro Detroit under the direction of engineer Dave Kovacek, “Sunday School” captures the electric atmosphere of an Of House live show. The decision to record live in the studio allowed the band to distill their raw, dynamic energy into a powerful sonic statement. “Dave was amazing to work with. He knew exactly what we were looking for and captured our sound perfectly,” Van Huis adds.
Since their formation in 2019, Of House has become a force in Detroit’s storied music scene, known for their intricate guitar work, compelling lyrics, and electrifying performances. Previous releases like “Name” and “Ripoffs” established the band’s reputation as one to watch, and “Sunday School” continues to build on that momentum.
“Sunday School” offers fans a glimpse of what’s to come from this dynamic band. Not just a musical endeavor, the single also serves a greater purpose: all proceeds will be donated to the Detroit Community Fridge, reinforcing Of House’s commitment to its local community.
