Franco-Turkish singer-songwriter Mathis Akengin has released his debut album “Passage des Fleurs,” an intimate, piano-led collection inspired by family, identity, and the unspoken bonds that connect generations.
At the heart of the album is a deeply personal tribute to Akengin’s Turkish grandfather. Rather than telling a straightforward story, Passage des Fleurs unfolds like a heartfelt letter, exploring the idea that love and understanding often exist beyond words. Through delicate songwriting and expressive arrangements, the project reflects on memory, heritage, and the quiet moments that shape human relationships.
The album’s title draws inspiration from Çiçek Pasajı, the historic passageway in Istanbul where Akengin spent part of his childhood. Serving as both a physical place and a powerful metaphor, it represents transition, where fragility and strength coexist, becoming a recurring theme throughout the record.
Musically, Passage des Fleurs is built around elegant piano compositions that allow silence and space to carry as much emotional weight as the melodies themselves. Akengin’s understated approach creates an immersive listening experience, where intimate moments gradually build into emotionally powerful crescendos. His songwriting occupies a distinctive space between the cinematic lyricism of Agnès Obel and the understated charm of Baxter Dury, resulting in a sound that feels both timeless and contemporary.
Before releasing his debut album, Mathis Akengin had already established himself as an emerging talent on the French music scene. He was selected for Les Inouïs du Printemps de Bourges before later performing at Les Eurockéennes, milestones that highlighted his growing reputation as a compelling live performer.
His unconventional musical journey began early. Akengin toured from the age of 13 and, as a teenager, regularly travelled by coach to London to collaborate and jam with fellow musicians, choosing creative exploration over conventional routines. Along the way, he also worked with artists including Catfish and Dead Chic, while contributing arrangements for French rock band Matmatah.
The album also includes his acclaimed single “First Floor,” which has amassed more than 920,000 organic streams on Spotify, demonstrating the growing international appeal of his emotionally resonant songwriting.
With Passage des Fleurs, Mathis Akengin introduces himself as an artist capable of transforming deeply personal experiences into universally relatable music. Rich in emotion, subtle in execution, and rooted in cultural identity, the album marks the arrival of a distinctive new voice in contemporary piano-pop.
