Montreal rock trio Les Shirley have released their emotionally charged new single “PLAYER2,” the latest preview of their forthcoming album HAIL MARY, due for release on September 25, 2026.
Known for blending anthemic rock with punk intensity, the band takes a deeply introspective turn on “PLAYER2,” delivering a raw examination of self-sabotage, regret, and the painful consequences of repeatedly hurting the people closest to you.
Driven by urgent guitars and emotionally charged performances, the song explores the internal struggle of recognizing destructive behaviour while feeling trapped in a cycle that seems impossible to break. Rather than offering easy answers, “PLAYER2” captures the emotional weight of accountability, vulnerability, and the difficult journey toward personal growth.
The title serves as a poignant metaphor, portraying a romantic partner as a “player two” in life’s journey, someone who continues to stand by despite being caught in the fallout of another person’s unresolved inner battles. It’s a reflection on the imbalance that develops when one person is constantly trying to repair what the other keeps unintentionally breaking.
Lyrically, the track moves between confession and self-reflection, embracing uncomfortable honesty instead of self-justification. The recurring question, “What if I’m ready to play?”, hangs over the song as a fragile expression of hope, suggesting that change begins not with certainty, but with the willingness to confront one’s flaws.
“PLAYER2” follows the band’s previous single “Not My Problem” and further expands the emotional scope of HAIL MARY. Together, the releases hint at an album that balances explosive rock energy with deeply personal storytelling, exploring themes of identity, relationships, and emotional resilience.
Comprised of Raphaëlle Chouinard (vocals/guitar), Lisandre Bourdages (drums/vocals), and Sarah Dion (bass/vocals), Les Shirley have built a reputation as one of Canada’s most compelling rock acts. Their blend of punk urgency, memorable hooks, and fearless songwriting has earned them opportunities to tour extensively across Canada and Europe alongside artists including Foo Fighters, Green Day, Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, Billy Talent, Avril Lavigne, and The Beaches.
As proud members of the LGBTQ+ community, Les Shirley continue to bring authenticity and lived experience to their music, crafting songs that resonate through vulnerability as much as through sheer musical power.
With “PLAYER2,” the trio delivers another emotionally resonant rock anthem that showcases both their songwriting maturity and their ability to transform deeply personal struggles into universally relatable music.
