DEELA Is Spotify EQUAL Africa’s April Artist

Nigerian-British artist DEELA has been named Spotify’s EQUAL Africa artist of the month, marking a major moment in her rising career and underscoring her growing impact on the global music scene.

The recognition comes as part of Spotify’s EQUAL Africa initiative, a programme dedicated to amplifying female voices shaping the continent’s contemporary soundscape. DEELA’s selection highlights her distinct ability to merge rap, hip-hop, and Afro-influenced elements into a sound that feels both dynamic and forward-thinking.

Born in Lagos and raised between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, DEELA has steadily built a reputation for her genre-blending artistry. Drawing inspiration from both West African musical traditions and the UK’s underground scene, her music balances sharp lyricism with melodic experimentation. Early releases such as ‘FIT,’ ‘Anyways,’ and ‘Watchu Mean’ helped introduce her to a wider audience and establish her artistic identity.

Her 2025 album “Wicked” marked a significant milestone, featuring standout tracks like ‘Slide’ and ‘Why Always Me?’ that further showcase her versatility and evolving sound.

She noted that the artist’s creativity and drive reflect the energy currently defining Africa’s music scene, adding that the EQUAL programme continues to open doors and expand opportunities for women across the industry.

DEELA, in response, described her music as “exciting, cheeky, and lively,” emphasizing that her creative process is rooted in confidence, freedom, and enjoyment. She also highlighted the importance of persistence for emerging artists, encouraging them to stay consistent and trust the journey.

Addressing the realities of navigating the music industry as a woman, she stressed the need for visibility and self-advocacy. According to her, confidently taking up space and building meaningful connections remains key to success in an often challenging environment.

Reflecting on what the EQUAL programme means to her, DEELA described the recognition as a celebration of unapologetic self-expression and representation. As her profile continues to grow, her inclusion in the initiative signals a promising future and reinforces her role in pushing African music further onto the global stage.
