AF90 Blends Pop and Paranoia in ‘Drugs On The Weekend’

Austrian pop maverick AF90 (Andreas Födinger) returns with “Drugs On The Weekend”, a sleek, sinister, and irresistibly funky indictment of modern escapism. Blending Talking Heads’ wiry neurosis with Dua Lipa’s razor-sharp pop instincts, the track transforms corporate despair into a dancefloor rebellion—one laced with irony, existential dread, and just enough hedonistic glee to make the medicine go down.

The song follows a prototype of the disillusioned yuppie: numb to his soul-crushing job, counting the hours until the weekend offers temporary salvation in pills, clubs, and empty euphoria.  But this isn’t just a sad bop—it’s a full-blown disco exorcism. The production marries slap-bass funk with icy synths, creating a soundtrack that’s as addictive as the vices it critiques. The chorus is pure pop venom, sticky enough to lodge in your brain for days, while the verses twitch with David Byrne-esque paranoia.

A veteran of Austria’s alt-pop scene (Bilderbuch, Farewell Dear Ghost), Födinger has spent years sharpening his signature sound: hook-heavy, genre-fluid, and dripping with subversive wit. Since going solo in 2022, he’s dominated airwaves (FM4, UK/German radio) and stages (touring with Parov Stelar, Shout Out Louds), proving that smart pop can still pack a punch.

“Drugs On The Weekend” follows 2024’s Big Business EP but ramps up the chaos, leaning into live-band ferocity (his six-piece touring act replicates the track’s tidal-wave energy). It’s AF90 at his best: polished yet feral, a satirist in glitter boots.

‘Drugs On The Weekend’ is Proof that pop can be brainy, biting, and utterly irresistible all at once.
