New York-born, Florida-based indie rockers Velvet Sun make a triumphant return with their new Empire EP, led by the titular rock anthem that perfectly encapsulates their signature blend of dreamy atmospherics and raw power. The four-track collection serves as both a homecoming to their Britpop-inspired roots and an evolution of their distinctive sound that has drawn comparisons to everyone from Suede to My Bloody Valentine over their two-decade career.
The EP’s title track “Empire” immediately establishes the band’s mastery of tension and release, oscillating between swirling psychedelic textures and punchy, staccato basslines that recall the best of 90s alternative rock. Frontman Scott Weinkle’s vocals float effortlessly over the shifting musical landscape, at once ethereal and commanding. This is followed by the previously released single “Wait,” whose jangly guitars and wistful lyrics showcase the band’s gift for crafting emotionally charged romantic narratives.

The other half proves equally compelling with “Star,” a glorious nod to 70s glam rock complete with Thin Lizzy-esque guitar harmonies, before closing with the shoegaze immersion of “Wonder” – all swirling distortion and lush soundscapes that demonstrate why Velvet Sun remains one of indie rock’s best-kept secrets.
Empire finds Velvet Sun at the peak of their powers, delivering four tracks that collectively serve as a masterclass in alternative rock craftsmanship. From the anthemic title track to the dreamy closer, this EP reaffirms the band’s status as torchbearers of a classic sound while pushing it firmly into the present.
Love it.!
