Bristol-based alternative rock band splitxlip introduce their self-described Grit Pop sound with “What You Waiting For?”, a punchy, guitar-driven debut single aimed at procrastinators, overthinkers and anyone waiting for the perfect moment to start living.
Led by frontwoman Bailey Blair, alongside Mikey Dobbins on guitar and Joe Clements on drums, splitxlip combine crunchy guitars, restless energy and big pop hooks, drawing on influences including Blur, Arctic Monkeys, Garbage and Wet Leg. The result is a sound that brings the attitude of alternative rock into contact with the immediacy of pop, without losing its rough edges.
For Blair, the project grew out of a desire to create music that matched the sounds she heard in her head. Before forming splitxlip, she built a career as a songwriter, writing for stadium-selling artists around the world and working within the pop and dance industries. But the experience of handing songs to other people to bring to life eventually left her wanting greater creative control.
“I got sick of hearing exactly what I wanted in my head, trying to explain it to somebody else, and then having them take it somewhere completely different,” Blair explains. “Eventually I thought, f*ck it, I’m going to learn how to do it myself. I wanted to be able to take a song from the idea in my head all the way to the speakers without losing it somewhere in between.”
She taught herself to produce, taking charge of the creative process from the initial idea through to the finished recording. Blair now writes and produces splitxlip’s music before bringing the songs to the stage with Dobbins and Clements, where the studio ideas become something louder and more immediate.
That independence is central to the band’s identity. Rather than trying to fit into an established genre, splitxlip have developed their own description for the sound: Grit Pop, where distorted, guitar-led rock meets catchy melodies and direct songwriting. It is a fitting label for a project that embraces both the messiness of everyday life and the instinct to turn it into something people can sing along to.
The band’s lyrics draw from the less polished parts of the human experience, including anxiety, loneliness, procrastination, depression and the pressure to have everything figured out. Blair writes about the thoughts people often keep to themselves, finding ways to turn difficult feelings into songs that offer both recognition and release.
“I write about the stuff that’s actually going on in my head, usually the things you probably don’t want to admit you’re thinking,” she says. “If I can turn something I’ve been stressing about, or something that’s made me feel like shit, into a song people can laugh at and scream back at a show, then it doesn’t feel quite as heavy.”
That approach runs through “What You Waiting For?”, which takes aim at the habit of postponing life until circumstances feel right. Its central question challenges the idea that everything will eventually fall into place without action, while the lyric “A false economy / To win the lottery” pokes at the temptation to wait for an unlikely stroke of luck instead of making a start.
Although the subject matter touches on frustration and self-doubt, the intention is ultimately positive. splitxlip want listeners to recognise their own habits, laugh at the chaos and feel less isolated by the thoughts they may assume are theirs alone.
“A lot of the lyrics probably sound negative on paper because I’m writing about anxiety, loneliness, wasting time or feeling like you’re falling behind,” Blair says. “But we want the impact of the music to be positive. We want someone to hear it and go, ‘wow I do that too,’ laugh at themselves a bit, feel less alone and maybe actually go and do the thing they keep saying they’ll do.”
The accompanying music video extends that idea through a physical representation of trying to catch up with your own life. Blair directed, shot and edited the visual herself, using her phone, a SnorriCam and a field to create a sense of increasingly frantic movement. As the video unfolds, she runs harder and harder, turning the song’s restless energy into a visual metaphor for the struggle to stop overthinking and get moving.
Sonically, “What You Waiting For?” benefits from the experience of its collaborators behind the scenes. The track was mixed by Mark Needham, known for his work with The Killers and Imagine Dragons, and mastered by João Carvalho, whose credits include The Smashing Pumpkins and alt-J.
The single also marks the beginning of a much larger body of work. splitxlip have already completed their debut album, which is now waiting for its moment to arrive. With their first release, the band establish a clear creative direction built around sharp hooks, guitar-driven energy and lyrics that find humour and connection in everyday struggles.
For splitxlip, the message is straightforward: life does not have to be perfectly organised before you take part in it. “What You Waiting For?” turns that reminder into a lively introduction to a band determined to make guitar music that feels immediate, unfiltered and unmistakably their own.
