Second Cockpit Explores Hope and Emotional Resilience in “Den Fox”

French instrumental duo Second Cockpit introduced a new chapter in their musical journey with “Den Fox” a single released on March 20, 2026. Blending classical music, metal, jazz and post-rock influences, the track offered an exploration of hope, using an expansive, cinematic sound to express emotions that words alone cannot always capture.

Formed through a strong friendship and a shared desire to move beyond conventional musical boundaries, Second Cockpit brings together Clémentine on piano and Moog synthesizer and Yann on drums. Their contrasting musical backgrounds played an important role in shaping the sound of “Den Fox.”

Clémentine’s early piano training and experience with composition and improvisation brought a sensitive, expressive quality to the music, while Yann’s self-taught background in metal drumming contributed a raw, instinctive energy. Together, they created an instrumental experience that balanced delicacy with intensity.

At its core, “Den Fox” focused on hope and the possibility of finding light amid uncertainty. Rather than relying on lyrics to communicate its message, the single allowed its musical arrangement to carry the emotional weight. Its combination of piano, synthesizer textures and percussion reflected Second Cockpit’s approach to storytelling through sound, inviting listeners to interpret the music through their own experiences. This wordless approach gave the track room to connect with different audiences, particularly listeners drawn to instrumental music that encourages reflection and emotional engagement.

The single demonstrated the duo’s interest in bringing together musical styles that might traditionally occupy separate spaces. Elements associated with classical composition met the force of metal-inspired drumming, while jazz and post-rock influences contributed to a sound that resisted easy categorisation. The fusion formed part of Second Cockpit’s wider artistic identity, in which atmosphere, contrast and emotional movement were central to the listening experience.

“Den Fox” serves as an introduction to the emotional landscape of Imagine, a six-track project built around a range of human experiences. While the lead single explored hope, other tracks on the EP approached different emotional territories.

The release of “Den Fox” was accompanied by a live-session video on March 26, giving audiences another way to experience the track and the duo’s musical interplay. Second Cockpit also continued to build its presence through live performances, including appearances at events such as Nancy Jazz Pulsations and Au Grès Du Jazz, alongside other concerts across France.

With “Den Fox” Second Cockpit presented hope not as an uncomplicated feeling, but as an emotion that can exist alongside difficulty and uncertainty. The single established the opening mood for Imagine while highlighting the duo’s distinctive combination of musical influences. By allowing instrumental expression to take the lead, Clémentine and Yann created a piece that encouraged listeners to pause, reflect and find their own meaning in the music.
