Rising London Artist Rio Rainz Unveils New Single “17”

Breakthrough singer and rapper Rio Rainz releases his latest single, “17”, a raw and deeply introspective track that marks one of his most personal releases to date. Dropping on the same day as his high-profile opening slot for Rizzle Kicks at their headline show at KOKO, this single explores Rio’s journey through mental health struggles, giving listeners a candid glimpse into one of the most challenging periods of his life.

In “17”, Rio confronts feelings of pain, isolation, and longing, reflecting on the battles he faced during his formative years. Speaking on the single, Rio shares, “The song captures my struggle with pain and isolation, feelings that have been with me since I was a teenager. I often find myself feeling pretty disconnected, even in crowded places, and I long for an escape from the emotional chaos. It’s a raw reflection of my challenges growing up, dealing with mental health, and the journey to find myself amongst all the messiness. Ultimately, it’s a raw expression of longing for something real whilst grappling with my past. I’m just trying to find my identity through part-time turbulence.

This year, Rio Rainz has made a powerful impact on the scene with a series of standout tracks including “Bad!”, “Mutual Butterflies”, and “Neverland”, each release reinforcing his reputation as an introspective and multi-dimensional artist. Raised in a diverse household influenced by his Jamaican and Irish heritage, Rio grew up listening to a range of genres, from soul to classic reggae, and singer-songwriters like Amy Winehouse, who continues to shape his artistry. Music has been a constant force in his life, helping him build confidence as he honed his skills on the keyboard, played in church, and attended performing arts classes at Centre Stage in north London.

Rio’s debut at fifteen with a viral Black Box freestyle highlighted his dual talents in rapping and singing, setting the stage for his debut EP, “Withdrawal Symptoms”, and follow-up, “Cobwebs in My Room.” His DIY-Alt-Rap/R&B style resonates with fans for its authenticity, with lyrics that openly express his own highs and struggles. This openness and rare perspective for his age have allowed him to form genuine connections with his growing fanbase, a community that has quadrupled in recent years.

Co-signs from tastemakers like The Face, NME, Hypebeast, MTV, and Complex have only amplified Rio’s trajectory. His sold-out debut showcase at The Lower Third solidified his position as one of London’s most promising young artists. With “17”, Rio Rainz adds yet another powerful chapter to his musical journey, inviting fans to experience his raw storytelling and unique blend of sounds.
