Mel D Finds the Sweetness in Bittersweet Emotions on ‘ORANGE’

Zurich-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mel D explores the complicated nature of intimacy and desire on “ORANGE,” a shimmering new single that blends folk, soul, indie pop, and electronic music. Set for release on 9 October via Two Gentlemen, the track sees the Swiss artist turn her attention to human connection and the emotions that make it both beautiful and difficult.

Following her EP “NOT CRAZY” and widely acclaimed debut “YOUNG BONES,” Mel D opens a new chapter in her songwriting by looking beyond her own experiences and considering the strange dynamics that shape relationships between people. Her clear, expressive vocals and gift for memorable melodies provide the foundation for a song that balances warmth with a lingering sense of melancholy.

At the centre of “ORANGE” is a deceptively simple image: an orange that has been carefully peeled, with its bitter parts removed to preserve the sweetness. The metaphor becomes a reflection on how people approach intimacy, often choosing the parts of an experience that feel good while pushing away the difficult elements. Yet those less pleasant parts can also be essential to the whole, raising questions about what is lost when we try to make life and relationships more comfortable than they naturally are.

Mel D transforms that idea into a sound that feels both playful and emotionally resonant. A shimmering melody moves alongside buoyant rhythms, warm bass and electronic textures, while layers of vocals gradually expand the track’s atmosphere. Folk and soul remain present in its emotional core, but subtle indie pop touches and the freedom of electronic production give the arrangement a sense of movement and openness.

The result is a song that allows its contrasting qualities to coexist. Its musical brightness does not erase the underlying melancholy; instead, the two elements make each other more affecting. That balance reflects the central idea of “ORANGE,” where sweetness and bitterness are not necessarily opposing forces but parts of the same experience.

Mel D’s approach to songwriting gives the track room to explore those contradictions without turning them into easy answers. Rather than presenting intimacy as something entirely uncomplicated, she considers the tension between what people want from one another and what they may be reluctant to confront. The orange becomes a memorable symbol for that impulse to separate pleasure from discomfort, even when both belong to the same story.

“ORANGE” will be available across digital streaming platforms, alongside a limited 7-inch vinyl pressing of 300 copies. The release will also be followed by a remix from DJ Real Madrid, scheduled to arrive on 28 October 2026 across digital platforms and as the B-side of the 7-inch vinyl.

With “ORANGE,” Mel D continues to build on the distinctive musical world introduced through her earlier releases. Blending soulful vocals, expansive production and thoughtful imagery, she turns an everyday object into a meditation on desire, connection and the complicated beauty of being human.
