Lucky Daye Embraces Creative Freedom on New Album ALOUD!

Lucky Daye is stepping into a new phase of his artistry with ALOUD!, a 15-track album that finds the New Orleans-born singer, songwriter and producer pushing beyond creative expectations and embracing the freedom to make music entirely on his own terms. The project arrives just weeks before his first-ever performance in South Africa, where he is set to headline Once Upon A Time in Joburg on Saturday, December 5, 2026.

Taking place at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia, the event will also feature American artists Smino and Baby Rose, bringing together three distinct voices across contemporary R&B, soul and alternative hip-hop. The festival has previously hosted international acts including SiR, Xavier Omär, GoldLink and dvsn, building a following among South Africa’s R&B and neo-soul audiences. More performers for this year’s edition are still to be announced.

For Lucky, the Johannesburg date comes at an exciting point in his career, offering local fans their first opportunity to experience his music live while he introduces the ideas and sounds behind ALOUD!.

Released through Warner Records, the album finds Lucky taking a more uninhibited approach to his craft. Its title draws on the relationship between “allowed” and “aloud,” reflecting a central idea that runs through the project: the freedom to express yourself without waiting for anyone’s approval.

The 15-song collection features appearances from Leon Thomas, Pusha T, Muni Long, The Paradox and Akeem Ali, with longtime collaborator D’Mile among the producers. Moving through intimate R&B, electronic influences, smoky grooves and rock-soul textures, ALOUD! makes room for experimentation while retaining the emotional detail and vocal finesse that have become central to Lucky’s sound.

The album took shape during an unexpected break in Brazil, where time away from the usual demands of his career gave him space to reconnect with the pleasure of creating music. That experience helped shape a project centred on personal liberation, self-discovery and the confidence to follow instinct rather than expectation.

“I used to think I wasn’t allowed to do a lot of what I wanted, but I realized I had to allow myself to live ALOUD!” Lucky explains. “Don’t let anybody silence you or tell you who you’re supposed to be. Say what you want, move how you want, and dance your way through the hard times.”

Several collaborations bring different dimensions to the album. “Mouf Say,” featuring Pusha T, leans into a seductive, jazz-tinged atmosphere, giving Lucky plenty of room to work through its slow-burning arrangement. Leon Thomas reunites with him on “Fly U Out,” a smooth exploration of attraction and desire, while “Knockin,” featuring Muni Long and The Paradox, introduces a tougher, rock-influenced sound.

These moments capture the album’s range, with Lucky moving between romance, vulnerability and bolder musical choices without losing the instinctive songwriting that has made him a standout in contemporary R&B.

ALOUD! follows a productive period for the singer. His single “Nowhere Fast” has reached the Top 10 at U.S. R&B radio, while “Talk To Me” continues his exploration of complicated romantic feelings through richly arranged songwriting. His recent collaborations have also extended his presence beyond his solo releases, including Teyana Taylor’s VMA-nominated “Hard Part” and Chris Brown’s “Slow Jamz.”

He recently celebrated the album’s arrival with an appearance at GRAMMY Museum Presents: The Drop, where he performed and took part in an intimate conversation moderated by media personality Gia Peppers.

With ALOUD!, Lucky Daye is giving himself room to take risks, explore new sounds and move beyond expectations. His upcoming Johannesburg appearance will bring that latest creative direction to South African audiences for the first time.
