Sydney-based singer-songwriter Holly Wild has released her new indie-pop rock single “So Annoying,” a sarcastic and energetic track that turns the complicated feeling of being jealous of a seemingly perfect friend into a catchy musical confession.
Released today, September 25, alongside an accompanying music video, “So Annoying” arrives ahead of Wild’s debut album Technicolour, due next month. The new single sees the artist embrace a punchier and more playful side of her sound, blending garage-rock textures with pop sensibilities and plenty of attitude.
At the heart of the song is the familiar experience of having that one friend who appears to do everything effortlessly. They look incredible, remain completely unbothered and somehow seem to have life falling perfectly into place. Instead of hiding the jealousy that can come with that situation, Wild turns it into humour.
The result is a self-aware song about the petty thoughts that can run through your head while knowing full well that you’re being unreasonable. Wild exaggerates those feelings to create a playful commentary on an emotion that people may experience but rarely admit.
“‘So Annoying’ is about that one friend who makes everything look way too easy,” Wild explains. “My co-writer and I got a bit ridiculous imagining every petty thought you could have about her, and somewhere in all that laughing, the song showed up.”
Wild describes the track as an anthem for “friend-vy,” capturing the jealousy that can exist between friends without necessarily being spoken about.
Sonically, “So Annoying” matches that attitude with a lively garage-rock edge. Distorted electric guitar riffs and powerful drums drive the track, while lo-fi spoken-word vocals add a cheeky character to the verses. As the song builds, Wild’s gritty vocals push the record into a more chaotic burst of raspy frustration and upbeat energy.
The accompanying music video carries the same grungy personality. Set against street-art-inspired locations, the visual follows Wild and her friend as they casually wander around and shop together, while more deliberate direct-to-camera moments expose the thoughts behind the song.
Wild’s exaggerated expressions and lip-syncing to her sarcastic dialogue give the video a playful, almost confessional quality. The contrast between the relaxed friendship scenes and her intentionally dramatic reactions adds another layer of humour to the track.
The release comes after several years of development for Wild, who first began releasing music in 2021. Since then, she has expanded her work across music, television and international collaborations, working with respected industry talents including producer David Arkwright, whose credits include James Arthur, Teddy Swims and Katelyn Tarver, as well as Australian ARIA chart-topper Jolyon Petch.
That growing experience has helped Wild continue developing an identity that brings together different sides of her creativity. On “So Annoying,” she leans into a more unfiltered and playful approach, allowing sarcasm, humour and rock energy to drive the song.
