Genevieve Miles Unveils New Single ‘howl’

Genevieve Miles is back, and her latest single, “howl,” marks a significant evolution in her already multifaceted sound. Infused with elements of shoegaze and rock, this new track showcases a level of depth that resonates with the influences of iconic bands like Talking Heads, Slowdive, and Courtney Barnett. Described by Local and Live as “a true artist of today’s generation,” Genevieve’s sonic journey takes a compelling turn with this release, reflecting her maturity as a musician. Notably, “howl” is the first time she has recorded in the studio with her entire band, an experience made all the more poignant after her return to Birmingham at the beginning of the year.

The vibrant energy of Birmingham’s Digbeth district seeps into the fabric of “howl,” with its gritty atmosphere amplifying the track’s raw authenticity. Produced by Jo Cartledge, the single captures the excitement of a flourishing music scene, where bands like Gingham, Jazzcat, and pip are making their mark. Genevieve’s connection to this city is evident in her sound, as she embraces the community’s eclectic vibe. The new single reflects her ability to weave together diverse influences into a coherent musical narrative, making it a powerful addition to her growing discography.

Speaking about the song, Genevieve shares, “This has always been our favourite to play live; I am beyond excited that we can all finally cry and scream together at home to this song, one I wrote at ground zero of a broken heart.” This emotional resonance is palpable throughout “howl,” inviting listeners into her world of heartbreak and healing. The blend of ethereal vocals and layered instrumentation creates an atmosphere that is both introspective and expansive, embodying the essence of her artistic vision.

Following the success of her EP, So heavy, so hard to hold, which was recognized as one of BBC Introducing’s Top Tracks of 2023 and featured in Dead Good Music’s top ten EPs of the year, Genevieve has been on a creative roll. The EP’s lead single, “Good,” which first premiered in a Hyundai advert, has garnered over a million views, establishing her as a significant voice in the indie music landscape. As she continues to forge new expressions within her art, “howl” stands as a testament to Genevieve Miles’ unwavering commitment to evolving her sound while remaining deeply connected to her emotional roots.
