Producer and DJ, DJ Devo has released “I’m a Catch,” a genre-blending single featuring vocalist Natalia J that brings together house, UK rap, and UK garage influences with a message about confidence, self-worth, and embracing everything that makes a person who they are.
Originally recorded in 2020 during the COVID lockdown, the track began as a spontaneous creative project between DJ Devo and his partner, Natalia J. Confined by curfews and limited opportunities to go out, the pair decided to lift their spirits by making music together in the garage studio of DJ Devo’s home in Adeje, Tenerife. What started as a bit of fun during an uncertain period has now become a release with a much more personal meaning.
Musically, “I’m a Catch” sits at the intersection of house and UK rap, driven by the bouncy rhythm of UK garage. For Natalia J, the sound connects with the music she grew up listening to, while the track’s upbeat production gives it a playful, cheeky character. Her vision was to create something that felt confident and feminine, with an attitude listeners could embrace and a hook women could sing along to without hesitation.
There is also a personal detail hidden within the production. A short piano melody Natalia J learned during her school years became part of the song’s foundation when DJ Devo reworked it into strings for the finished record. The small musical contribution connects a memory from her past to a song that would eventually take on a new significance in her life.
Beneath its playful energy, “I’m a Catch” carries a message about recognising personal value beyond appearance. Since the song was first written, Natalia J has undergone major surgery and lived with physical and emotional scars that affected her confidence. Revisiting the record and bringing its accompanying video to life became part of reclaiming that sense of self, allowing the song’s original message to resonate differently.
Rather than suggesting that confidence depends on looking perfect or meeting a particular standard, the track encourages a broader understanding of what makes someone valuable. Experiences, resilience, personality and the journey a person has travelled all form part of that picture. Its cheeky title delivers the message with a sense of fun, but the story behind it gives the single a more vulnerable edge.
The accompanying music video was filmed during a holiday in Zanzibar. Instead of relying on elaborate choreography or a heavily constructed visual concept, the pair opted for a raw, spontaneous approach that captures moments as they happened. That natural feel complements the song’s origins as a project created between two people simply looking for a way to make the best of their circumstances.
“I’m a Catch” will also receive its first live performance at a mental health festival in Reading. The setting connects naturally with the song’s themes, bringing its message of self-acceptance and confidence into a space where conversations about emotional wellbeing are particularly relevant.
DJ Devo’s route into music production has also involved an element of experimentation. A DJ with a broad musical taste and a particular appreciation for 1990s R&B, he moved towards production after travelling to Tenerife in 2018 to feature at Tramps, one of the island’s main nightclubs. With the venue’s music policy focused on house, he began teaching himself GarageBand before progressing to Logic and developing his production skills in a genre that was not initially his natural territory.
His early releases included “Tip Toe,” a rap collaboration with Tenerife-based rapper Mr Nicks about sneaking out of a hotel room following a bad date, as well as a remix of the 1934 song “Till the Cows Come Home.” Influences such as Dr Dre and The Neptunes further reflect the range of sounds informing his approach to music.
