Manchester-based singer-songwriter Daisy Harris has released her new single ‘Spoon Song’, a warm and playful indie-pop track that puts one of the most important relationships in her life at the centre of the story: her bond with her rescue cat, Junebug.
The new release sees Harris move away from the 00s pop-inspired sound that featured heavily across her 2024 project Man Of The Year. Instead, ‘Spoon Song’ offers something softer and more intimate, turning everyday companionship into the subject of a heartfelt love song.
The track follows ‘This Is It’, a deeply emotional song Harris has described as her favourite piece she has ever written. While that song explored the pain of romantic heartbreak, ‘Spoon Song’ shifts the focus towards the love found in non-romantic relationships.
For Harris, that relationship is with Junebug. She describes the song as a dedication to one of her life’s greatest love stories and calls it the sweetest and most straightforward love song on her upcoming sophomore album, Shula.
Harris’ songwriting is full of whimsy, using dreamy imagery to express the almost spellbinding affection between herself and Junebug. The lyrics explore quiet moments of companionship, from watching each other across the room to the comfort of having her cat sleeping close by.
But beneath its charming subject, ‘Spoon Song’ also reflects on a more complicated emotional truth. Harris uses her connection with Junebug to explore how deeply we can love the people and animals around us while recognising that certain forms of companionship cannot completely replace romantic love or human connection.
Musically, the song keeps that intimacy intact. Acoustic elements provide a gentle foundation, while layered vocals and twinkling percussion add texture without taking away from the personal nature of the songwriting. The result is a track that feels light and affectionate while still carrying some emotional depth.
‘Spoon Song’ is also another example of Harris’ commitment to doing things her own way. She wrote, produced, and directed the project herself, while working with a small team of creatives including Jacob Harris, also known as Davoli, on drums, Lewis Mortimer on mastering, and Gabbi Goldman on photography.
The DIY approach continues into the visual identity surrounding Shula. Harris created the font used on the artwork herself, taking inspiration from the whimsical world of early Buffy the Vampire Slayer, while other collaborators have contributed to elements of the project’s visual presentation.
Still in her twenties, Harris has steadily developed a distinctive identity through genre-fluid indie-pop guitar music. Her influences include Mazzy Star, The Smashing Pumpkins and The Cardigans, with her catalogue moving between dreamy, lo-fi and more energetic pop sounds.
Her previous releases include the breakout record Tornado Dreams, the lo-fi Fish Tank EP and 2024’s Man Of The Year. She has also built her reputation through live performances, independently working the showcase circuit in Glasgow and appearing at Manchester events including Manchester Micro Music Festival and Teenage Market.
With ‘Spoon Song’ now out, Harris continues to establish herself as an artist who is comfortable making music on her own terms. The song may be about a rescue cat, but its bigger message is surprisingly universal: love can take many forms, and sometimes the most meaningful relationships are found in the simplest moments.
As anticipation builds around Shula, ‘Spoon Song’ gives listeners another glimpse into Harris’ evolving sound and songwriting world, while proving that her DIY approach remains at the heart of everything she creates.
