Palm Beach, Florida-based singer-songwriter Brit Drozda has unveiled her deeply personal new single ‘Flowers From Heaven,’ a soulful pop-folk tribute inspired by the loss of her only brother and longtime musical collaborator, Virgil Price.
Built around acoustic warmth and gradually expanding into a fuller band arrangement, the song finds Brit transforming personal grief into a moving reflection on love, remembrance and the enduring connections we share with those who are no longer with us.
The story behind the song began while Brit was navigating the early stages of grief. Looking through old text messages in search of memories of her brother, she came across two video messages Virgil had sent containing the beginnings of an unfinished song.
Music had always been a shared language between the siblings. Brit and Virgil started writing songs together while they were still in high school before reconnecting creatively at Davidson College, where Brit served as the lead vocalist for Virgil’s band.
The siblings eventually formed their own musical project, The Prices, further intertwining their personal relationship with their creative lives. Finding Virgil’s unfinished material gave Brit an opportunity she never expected: the chance to complete a song with her brother, even after his passing.
Initially, however, finishing the track proved difficult. Brit returned to the song several times but struggled to find an approach that felt right. That changed during one of her regular walks along a beach the siblings had visited during their high school years.
During one walk, Brit discovered a red rose that had washed ashore. The unexpected sight prompted a question that would ultimately become the foundation of the song.
“Are there flowers in heaven?”
She immediately saved the phrase on her phone as a potential lyric. As she retraced her steps along the shoreline, two long-stemmed hot pink carnations washed up at her feet. For Brit, the moment became a powerful reminder of her brother and the sense of connection she continues to experience following his death. Rather than allowing the song to remain solely a reflection of loss, the experience gave Brit a way to approach Virgil’s unfinished music through hope.
She wrote ‘Flowers From Heaven’ on her brother’s piano while incorporating the piano part he had originally created, turning the track into both a tribute and what became their final musical collaboration. The resulting song carries the intimacy of its origins while gradually opening into a fuller arrangement, mirroring Brit’s movement from personal grief toward a more hopeful understanding of remembrance.
Adding another layer to the project is acclaimed producer Scott Jacoby, known for his work with artists including Coldplay, Vampire Weekend and Sia. Jacoby had previously collaborated with Brit on her 2019 EP Seashells & Stories, making their reunion particularly meaningful for the new project.
Given the deeply personal subject matter, the recording process required a level of sensitivity and trust. Brit credits Jacoby with helping her create an environment where she could remain emotionally open while ensuring the music honoured her brother.
“I was also able to be vulnerable and to have someone who would help me honour my brother while working in an emotionally delicate state,” Brit shares.
‘Flowers From Heaven’ ultimately stands as more than a song about loss. It captures the complicated process of holding onto someone through memories, music and the small moments that can offer comfort after they are gone.
For Brit Drozda, completing Virgil’s unfinished work has allowed their musical relationship to continue in a different form—turning an unfinished song into a lasting tribute to the bond between two siblings.
