San Francisco singer-songwriter Anthony Arya explores the complicated emotions attached to memories and moving on with his new single, ‘The Dress’, a release that blends the warmth of Laurel Canyon folk rock with contemporary indie pop.
The track offers another glimpse into the sound Arya has been developing over the past few years, combining intimate songwriting with a production style that gradually builds towards a more expansive emotional release. At its centre is an everyday object that carries a much deeper meaning, becoming a reminder of a particular relationship, period of life and the feelings that remain after it has passed.
“The lyrics sit squarely between nostalgia and closure, and that also describes the musical approach,” Arya explains. “The subject of the song is a piece of clothing but it carries the weight of an entire season of my life.”
That tension between remembering and letting go shapes the song’s musical progression. ‘The Dress’ begins delicately, creating the feeling of revisiting a memory that has not entirely lost its emotional weight, before gradually opening into a fuller arrangement.
“The production mirrors that emotional tension, it starts delicate, like a memory you’re almost afraid to revisit, and then builds into a sweeping release of all the emotion bubbling to the surface,” he adds.
The single reflects Arya’s broader approach to songwriting, which draws on personal experiences, nostalgia and the emotional details of everyday life. While relationships remain a recurring subject, his music also explores the changing rhythms of San Francisco, the city where he grew up and continues to develop his career.
Musically, he takes inspiration from the folk rock singer-songwriters associated with the Laurel Canyon era, bringing those influences into a sound shaped by indie pop melodies and modern production. The result is music that balances the intimacy of acoustic storytelling with the momentum of a contemporary live performance.
‘The Dress’ also points towards Arya’s forthcoming album, scheduled for spring 2027. The project will introduce a more fully developed version of the sound he has been refining across his previous releases, drawing together reflective lyrics, melodic arrangements and the emotional contrasts that define his songwriting.
Arya’s journey began early. Before graduating from high school, he gained national attention through an appearance on NBC’s The Voice and recognition as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts for songwriting. Now in his early twenties, he has released four albums and established himself as one of Northern California’s most active touring artists.
His debut album, Going To California, arrived in 2018, building on the audience he had begun developing through his television appearance. In 2020, he followed with The Road, a project influenced by Bob Dylan and writers Jack Kerouac and F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose work helped shape its themes and perspective.
While attending university, Arya released Circles & the Flames in 2022. The album brought further recognition for his songwriting, earning him finalist placements in the International Songwriting Competition and International Acoustic Music Awards, alongside recognition from the Bluebird Cafe Golden Pick Contest and the Telluride Blues and Brews Fest Challenge.
His fourth album, As It Turns Out, followed in 2024. Recorded live at San Francisco’s historic Hyde Street Studios, the project helped propel him into an increasingly demanding schedule of headline performances across Northern California, including appearances at established venues and festivals.
That commitment to live music remains central to his development. Arya regularly performs more than 100 shows a year, building his audience through consistent touring and performances that combine relaxed, intimate moments with a growing sense of anticipation. His latest songs have also attracted more than one million views on Instagram, helping introduce his music to listeners beyond his home market.
The music discovery publication Ones To Watch has described Arya as an ideal discovery for Outside Lands attendees seeking intimate songwriting that can still connect on a festival stage. Singapore Airlines has also featured him in its in-flight magazine in recognition of his role in San Francisco’s music scene.
With ‘The Dress’, Arya continues to build on that momentum while preparing for the next phase of his career. The single brings together his interest in classic West Coast folk rock, modern indie pop and the personal stories that give his music its emotional foundation.
As he looks towards his spring 2027 album and an expanded touring schedule expected to include international dates, Arya is steadily widening his reach. ‘The Dress’ offers a preview of what lies ahead, turning a seemingly ordinary object into a reflection on memory, emotional attachment and the difficult process of finding closure.
