Award-winning British-Nigerian singer-songwriter, producer, and musician Ego Ella May has unveiled the official visuals for “Potluck Baby,” one of the standout tracks from her acclaimed sophomore album Good Intentions. Directed by Jelani Pomell, the visual brings a deeply personal layer to a song that explores identity, heritage, and belonging.
Taken from Good Intentions, which reached No. 2 on the Official UK Hip Hop and R&B Albums Chart, “Potluck Baby” finds Ego Ella May reflecting on the complexities of growing up between cultures and the ongoing journey of understanding where home truly lies.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, Ego shares:
“I wrote this song reflecting on questions about heritage, identity and what it means to belong. It’s about growing up in London whilst feeling the presence of another home, history and language in the background, and the feeling of trying to piece together where you fit within it all. My mum is speaking Igbo at the start of the visualiser and it feels very special to have that weaved into the track.”
The visual captures the intimacy and emotional depth that define the song, offering a thoughtful companion piece to a record rooted in self-discovery and cultural connection. The inclusion of her mother’s spoken Igbo at the opening of the visual adds another layer of authenticity, highlighting the personal experiences that continue to shape Ego’s artistry.
Released earlier this year, Good Intentions showcases Ego Ella May at her most expansive and self-assured. Produced by Ego herself alongside an impressive roster that includes Alfa Mist, Beat Butcha, LVTHER, Melo Zed, TAVE, and others, the album explores themes of community, freedom, vulnerability, and the complexities of human relationships.
Singles such as “What We Do,” co-produced with Wu-Lu, the groove-driven “What You Waiting For,” the socially conscious “We’re Not Free,” and the heartfelt “Don’t Take My Lover Away” provided early glimpses into the album’s emotional and thematic richness. Throughout the project, Ego draws inspiration from both personal reflection and literary influences, citing writers including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Patti Smith, Chinua Achebe, Ayobami Adebayo, and Joan Didion among her creative touchstones.
A distinctive voice within contemporary British music, Ego Ella May has built a reputation for blending soulful R&B, neo-soul, and jazz influences into a sound that feels timeless yet deeply personal. Since releasing her breakthrough EP Breathing Underwater in 2014, she has steadily established herself as one of the UK’s most compelling musical storytellers.
Her debut album Honey For Wounds earned widespread acclaim, securing Best Jazz Act at the 2020 MOBO Awards and Best Vocalist at the 2021 Jazz FM Awards. Her music has also reached audiences far beyond the music world, appearing in acclaimed television series, including Insecure, Sex Education, Dear White People, Queen Sugar, The Jackal, and And Just Like That through media entrepreneur Issa Rae’s Raedio platform.
Alongside collaborations with artists such as Ari Lennox, Theo Croker, and Kojey Radical, Ego continued to expand her artistic vision through her celebrated FIELDNOTES EP trilogy. More recently, she made her Canadian live debut on the main stage of the Montreal Jazz Festival and sold out her first headline performance at London’s legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.
With the release of the “Potluck Baby” visuals, Ego Ella May offers another powerful expression of the themes that have made Good Intentions such a resonant body of work, further cementing her place among the most thoughtful and distinctive voices in contemporary soul music.
