In Spite of Thunder Reveals Haunting Acoustic Ballad “The Downward Spiral”

French composer and multi-instrumentalist Cathy Isot continues to expand her artistic vision with the release of The Downward Spiral, a reflective acoustic ballad under her solo project In Spite of Thunder.

Classically trained as a singer and skilled across several instruments including transverse flute, keyboards, and guitar, Cathy Isot brings a distinctive blend of gothic aesthetics and classical influence to her music. Deeply inspired by gothic culture, classical composition, and Celtic folk traditions, she first introduced the project with the gothic symphonic metal single Drama Queen in 2022.

Before launching her solo venture, Isot was also known as the soprano and manager of the gothic doom metal band Spell of Enchantress, where she developed her theatrical vocal style and atmospheric musical approach.

With “The Downward Spiral,” however, she explores a softer yet deeply emotional side of her sound. The acoustic track reflects on the difficult journey of confronting and overcoming struggles of the mind in a society where depression is often overlooked. Rather than focusing solely on darkness, the song aims to capture the process of climbing out of those depths and rediscovering strength.

Sonically, the track evokes a cinematic atmosphere reminiscent of wandering through ancient, rain-soaked castles. A particularly distinctive element is the use of the harpsichord—an instrument that holds personal significance for Isot as her first keyboard. Its delicate yet unusual tone adds a striking neoclassical layer to the arrangement, giving the song a haunting elegance.

While Cathy Isot is currently working on a full gothic metal EP under the In Spite of Thunder project, releases like “The Downward Spiral” reveal the broader emotional and musical palette of her artistry. The result is a piece that feels intimate and atmospheric, balancing vulnerability with the dramatic sensibility that defines her gothic-inspired universe.
