Hull-based project 6:17, the solo endeavor of music producer Nick Russell, is set to release their highly anticipated EP, “Bleeding Through,” on July 26th. This experimental concept EP pushes boundaries and explores various genres, including acoustic, industrial, electronic, and IDM. “Bleeding Through” takes listeners on a captivating journey, following a central character as they question the meaning of life, strive for self-improvement, fall into a state of depression and psychosis, and ultimately overcome their mental health crisis.
The lead single, “Bleed,” serves as a visceral industrial track that delves into the profound experience of living with depression. Through the use of various samples, the song encapsulates the feeling that depression is always present, and sometimes one must embrace it to break free. The single also includes a compelling cover of “Splendid Soldiers” by Alev Lenz as a b-side, featuring George Garnett of the band Bedsit on drums.
“‘Bleeding Through’ is an ambitious concept EP that showcases the versatility of 6:17, exploring diverse genres and emotions,” said Nick Russell. “Each track tells a piece of the character’s story, capturing their journey through the depths of despair and ultimately finding hope and resilience.”
The EP was entirely recorded at the now-defunct Hull-based studio, Unit 45 Recordings, with Nick Russell taking charge of production, recording, and mixing. The mastering of “Bleeding Through” was skillfully handled by Aeris Houlihan of the band Witch Of The East. The music video for “Bleed” was shot and edited by Luke Hallett, known for his work with LIFE, Low Hummer, and Chiedu Oraka, among others. The EP’s artwork was captured by Nick Russell and edited by Matt Russell, while the press shots were taken by Rob Moses.
With “Bleeding Through,” 6:17 invites listeners into a unique and introspective musical experience. The EP’s experimental nature, combined with its profound exploration of mental health and personal growth, sets it apart as a significant release in the alternative music scene.
