Tetiana Viktory Unveils “Cosaque de Beethoven”

Composer and pianist Tetiana Viktory releases her evocative new composition, ‘Cosaque de Beethoven,’ a bold musical dialogue between Ukrainian folk tradition and European classical legacy.

At the heart of the piece lies one of Ukraine’s most beloved folk songs, “A Cossack Crossed the Danube,” a lyrical and heroic ballad depicting a Cossack bidding farewell to his beloved before riding off to war. The song embodies both tenderness and courage — defining elements of Cossack culture and identity.

Even Ludwig van Beethoven was captivated by the beauty of Ukrainian melodies. During his time in Vienna, Beethoven encountered the song in the salon of Andriy Rozumovsky, son of the last Ukrainian Hetman, Kyrylo Rozumovsky. Inspired by its character, Beethoven composed an arrangement, further bridging Ukrainian folk tradition with the European classical canon.

In “Cosaque de Beethoven,” Viktory intertwines two distinct musical worlds: the theme of Beethoven’s Trio in C minor — symbolizing struggle and strength — and the poignant melody of “A Cossack Crossed the Danube,” which brings lyrical warmth and song-like intimacy. The Cossack figure emerges as a timeless symbol: a warrior defending his homeland, embodying resilience, sacrifice, and spirit.

Through this composition, Viktory creates a crossroads of eras and cultures — where a folk melody expands into symphonic expression, and where the Cossack’s enduring spirit continues to inspire across centuries. “Cosaque de Beethoven” stands as both homage and renewal, honoring Ukrainian heritage while affirming its place within the broader European musical tradition.
