Swamp Music Players Reunite with Wily Bo Walker for Haunting Cover of ‘Florida Keys’

Canadian dark Americana collective Swamp Music Players reunite with British blues-rock powerhouse Wily Bo Walker for their hypnotic cover of “Florida Keys”, a slow-burning, cinematic swamp anthem drenched in gothic atmosphere and raw blues grit. Recorded across studios in Victoria, London, and Detroit, this collaborative reimagining bridges continents and decades, serving as a perfect precursor to their upcoming EP ‘Swamp Sandwich Too’ (May 2025).

From the first murk-drenched guitar lick, the track oozes noirish mystique, with Walker’s gravel-and-whiskey vocals lending a sinister gravitas to the tale. The production is a masterclass in texture—Evert Pater’s unconventional percussion (using tools and iron implements) clanks like ghostly chains, while Neil James’ bouzouki weaves a hypnotic, folk-tinged melody. Detroit’s Steve Greene (Battle Chamber Studio) ties it all together with layers of eerie synths and keys, creating a haunting, immersive soundscape that feels ripped from a Southern Gothic film score.

The song’s history runs deep—originally penned by Ball Gag n Chain Gang (2008) and later co-adapted by Pater, this version pays homage while fully claiming it as Swamp Music Players’ own. Walker’s presence is particularly fitting; his longstanding creative kinship with the band (dating back to 2012’s “Devil’s Toothpick”) adds a rich, lived-in chemistry, as if the track was always meant to be his.

A smoldering, atmospheric triumph, “Florida Keys” proves swamp music is alive, well, and deliciously sinister. For fans of Tony Joe White’s shadowy blues, Nick Cave’s storytelling menace, and the sound of a storm brewing over the bayou.
