Welsh soul sensation SJ Hill has returned with his most emotionally charged and dramatic release to date, unveiling his new single ‘Spell On Me’. The track captures the intensity of a love so consuming it can lift you to your highest point, tear you apart, and still pull you back in — even when walking away feels like the only logical choice.
Following the viral momentum of his previous single ‘Tonight’, which amassed over 1.4 million Instagram views and more than 40,000 streams, SJ Hill continues to cement his reputation as one of Wales’ most compelling emerging voices. With ‘Spell On Me’, he delivers a soul-soaked performance rich in vulnerability, passion, and cinematic emotion.
SJ Hill’s journey has taken him from local stages to global recognition. His music has received strong support from Spotify’s Fresh Finds, BBC Radio 1Xtra, and BBC Radio Wales’ A-List, while his live performances have seen him grace major UK venues including Wembley Arena and the O2 Academy London. A fearless performer, the Cardiff-born singer reached X Factor bootcamp in 2017, later went on to win an episode of ITV’s Romeo & Duet, and reached the semi-finals of LLIAS – The Welsh Voice. Most recently, these achievements led to him performing for guests including John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, and Chris Martin at an exclusive New Year’s Eve celebration at the Soneva Jani Resort in the Maldives.
Speaking on the track, SJ Hill explains: “‘Spell On Me’ is a song I hope a lot of people can relate to. It’s about being in a relationship where you know someone isn’t good for you, but you keep coming back because they lift you up and break you down in equal measure.”
Co-written with long-time collaborator Tommy John, ‘Spell On Me’ explores the emotional duality of a Jekyll-and-Hyde relationship — where love and pain exist side by side. The lyrics dive deep into emotional dependency, addiction to chaos, and the feeling of being completely under someone’s spell, where pleasure and suffering become inseparable.
Honest, dramatic, and deeply personal, the song blends raw confessional lyricism with hypnotic melodic hooks and powerhouse soul vocals that cut straight to the core. Fans of Hozier, Rag’n’Bone Man, Lewis Capaldi, Dermot Kennedy, The Weeknd, and Sam Smith will find familiar emotional depth and vocal intensity in ‘Spell On Me’.
Staying true to his roots, SJ Hill recorded the single in a unique and intimate setting — a small, old-school studio in the Rhondda Valley, once a Salvation Army building and now a creative hub for Welsh talent. Owned and run by Daniel Edwards, the space embodies authenticity and community. Working closely with Edwards and Tommy John, ‘Spell On Me’ carries a strong sense of Welsh identity, with the heart of SJ Hill’s local surroundings woven into every note.
