Marseille

Marseille – History (Single Review)

Marseille is back, and they’re making a statement with History—their most ambitious, heartfelt, and downright fearless single yet. A track that’s destined to dominate indie-rock playlists in 2025, History has already caught the attention of BBC 6 Music’s Indie Forever show as their Indie-pendence Play and received praise from tastemakers like The Line of Best Fit. It’s clear that Marseille is on the verge of something big, and this track is their rallying cry.

Hailing from northern Derbyshire, the five-piece—Will Brown (vocals), Joe Labram (lead guitar), Lennon Hall (guitar), Will Sabey (bass), and Tom Spray (drums)—is injecting fresh energy into the UK indie-rock and shoegaze scene. Despite being just 19 on average, they’ve already built a formidable reputation, selling out 150-250 capacity venues and playing major festival stages, including YNOT Festival’s Quarry Stage, the Isle of Wight Festival, and Manchester Academy 2. They’ve even shared the stage with legends like The Twang and The Bluetones, setting the stage for an electrifying 2025.

With History, Marseille delivers a track that tugs at the heartstrings while carrying their signature swagger. It’s a love letter to childhood dreams, the kind that inspire people to leave a mark on the world. The song’s anthemic drive, coupled with soaring melodies and evocative lyricism, makes it one of their most compelling releases yet. Produced by Michael Smith (Wolf Alice), the track seamlessly blends waves of psych, groove, and raw emotion, making sure the audience stays hooked from start to finish.

Lead singer Will Brown puts it best: “History is a simple song which applies to any young person with big aspirations. It’s probably the most personal to us as a collective as we fit that criterion. We are five young lads that want our legacy to be remembered, and that is one of the most special things that anyone can ever write about.”

As Britpop experiences a resurgence—with the Oasis reunion reigniting the genre’s flame—Marseille is primed to lead the charge. With their zero-fucks-given attitude and a sound that’s both nostalgic and forward-thinking, History isn’t just a song—it’s a statement. Expect to hear it blasting from festival stages, indie clubs, and car speakers all year long.
