UK soul five-piece Mamas Gun return with DIG!, the second single and title track from their forthcoming album. Featuring the legendary Brian Jackson on vocals, keys, and flute, the track celebrates a long-awaited musical reunion between frontman Andy Platts and Jackson, whose friendship spans nearly twenty years. Recorded straight to analogue tape, “DIG!” captures the band’s signature authentic soul sound while encouraging listeners to look beyond surface appearances.
Following the BBC-supported single Food For The Flames, “DIG!” showcases Mamas Gun’s rich musicianship and groove-driven lineup. The track exemplifies the UK quintet’s blend of blue-eyed soul and classic soul influences, drawing subtle inspiration from icons such as Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Lewis Taylor, and Sly Stone.
The band’s five members each bring a distinct sonic character to the recording: drummer Chris Boot provides a steady, grooving backbone; bassist Cameron Dawson delivers warm, James Jamerson-inspired lines; guitarist Terry Lewis adds percussive Motown-style riffs and shimmering textures; keyboardist Dave Oliver navigates everything from gospel Hammond to synth-driven atmospheres; and atop it all, Andy Platts’ honeyed, emotionally resonant vocals unify the ensemble.
Since forming in 2007, Mamas Gun has released six albums, steadily evolving their sound from modern, pop-inflected beginnings to the soulful, groove-driven identity captured on Golden Days, Cure The Jones, and now DIG!. Platts, who studied at LIPA and has penned hits for Take That, James Morrison, and numerous Asian pop artists, remains the primary songwriter and driving force behind the band.
“Some 20 years later, Brian and I picked up where we left off and instantly clicked,” Platts reflects. “This collaboration feels natural and timely, and it captures the spirit of what Mamas Gun has become: authentic, soulful, and deeply musical.”
