Jei-Rynn’s ‘gas mask baby’ EP Explores Emotional Depths

Pushing forward with his busy 2025 so far, Jei-Rynn shows no signs of slowing down as he releases his long-awaited EP, ‘gas mask baby’. Offering an emo-tinged stamp on contemporary guitar music, he looks to further cement his reputation as an excitable creative talent.

Combining his authentic alt-rock rasp with a magnetic, emo twist, ‘gas mask baby’ stands its ground as a riotous body of work. Offering cathartic riffs, sing-along melodies and bagfuls of colourful, sonic protrusion, the five-track looks to revitalise alternative music-making with its raw, relatable sentiments. Featuring previously released teaser singles ‘never dying young’ and ‘maybe?’, the EP additionally hosts three additional unreleased tracks: relentless, no-holds-barred guitar anthems, and retrospective, acoustic ballads amongst them.

“The EP was written from a very honest, vulnerable place, and a lot of my fears and insecurities from the time I was writing it were explored. I was writing about self-worth, existential terror, loss of innocence, politically charged social oppression, feeling numb, and a lot of other very emotional topics. To reflect these raw feelings, the instrumentation came out very rooted in my early influences; the album is largely guitar-driven with some synths sprinkled in for added colour and texture. The EP was recorded with Alex Newport (Mars Volta, Bloc Party, At the Drive In), a talented producer and mixing engineer who really helped to control the chaos of the songs and to bring out the songs’ honesty in a way that was palatable. I’ve always loved Alex’s attention to detail and stylistics. We share a love of goth, grunge, and 60s music, and these sounds found their way into the songs.”

Born in Orange County, California, Jei-Rynn is a singer-songwriter who feels reignited by the golden era of grunge, pop punk and everything in between. Since first getting piano lessons at the age of nine, Jei-Rynn’s musical palette was only going to grow as he started to further his curiosity by picking up a guitar and writing his own songs. Despite suffering from anxiety and periods of depression in his youth, he turned to music making as a lifeline – using his creativity as a pipeline for self-expression and exploration.

Debuting as a solo artist in 2019, he released his single ‘screaming inside’ to quick critical acclaim on the underground, telling tales of isolation and identity crisis as an Asian-American in an era of Asian-hate. Over his colourful career so far, Jei-Rynn has made waves with the string of emphatic releases that have followed him. Working with a whole host of producers, including Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, Bloc Party), Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount (Mayday Parade, Cartel), his releases have been featured on international radio stations with the StoneBridge remix of ‘bloodsuckers’ peaking at No. 10 on the UK Commercial Pop Chart. Complete with a dynamic live show, he has shared the stage with the likes of Lil Xan, Tommy Vext (of Bad Wolves fame) and Love Ghost. Charging ahead with new music on the horizon, Jei-Rynn looks to further cement his reputation as one of the fastest-growing artists in his game.

On gas mask baby, Jei-Rynn unleashes a searing blend of emo catharsis and alt-rock grit—an EP that crackles with vulnerability, political urgency, and raw sonic fire
