Teenage best mates Freight are keeping their breakout summer alive with the release of their second single, “The Only Thing I Know”.
Fresh from high-energy festival appearances at Newton Festival (alongside The K’s), Stranger Ways Festival, and Together Again Festival, the Warrington-based quartet—Luka, Ted, Jacob, and Anton have been road-testing material from their forthcoming debut EP Kaleidoscope (out October 8th). The result is a single that not only thrives in a live setting but thrives on audience participation.
“It’s my favourite song to play live,” says frontman Luka Gunes. “I teach the crowd the words of the chorus and get them to sing along, which is always amazing to see and hear. It’s got that real sing-along feel.”
Lyrically, “The Only Thing I Know” taps into the relatable awkwardness of young love—navigating a night out, nerves buzzing, trying to summon the courage to make the first move. Luka admits the song was inspired in part by the film Superbad, capturing that mix of hesitation, hope, and humour. “I think it’s subconsciously turned out to be a bit of a love song too,” he reflects.
Produced by Gareth Nuttall at Lounge Studios (Wigan) and Soundhouse Studios (Liverpool), the track blends the band’s indie grit with a festival-ready sheen, signalling that Freight are fast finding their voice. Following their debut single “Me”—which earned BBC Introducing support—this latest release solidifies their growing reputation as one of the North West’s most exciting new acts.
Kaleidoscope will be available on streaming platforms, CD, and vinyl from October 8th, with pre-orders now open via the band’s socials. This one feels tailor-made for a packed field of strangers belting the words back at the stage—a sign that Freight aren’t just writing songs, they’re writing moments.
