Louise Goffin Shares Uplifting New Single ‘Promise Yourself’

Some songs arrive fully formed, while others need a little patience, a few unexpected collaborators and perhaps a touch of musical magic. Louise Goffin’s “Promise Yourself” belongs firmly in the second category. What began as a late-night musical experiment with her son gradually grew into an uplifting, reflective song about finding your way beyond difficult thoughts and remembering to embrace the world around you.

The story behind the track is just as lovely as the feeling it creates. Goffin was working in her home studio when her son came in and asked to hear what she was making. He picked up a guitar, they started singing spontaneous, mostly nonsensical phrases over the music, and the early idea was captured in a phone recording. The title came that very night, but finding the right words to complete the song proved to be a much longer journey.

The music had such a strong atmosphere that Goffin struggled to find lyrics that felt equally meaningful. Some lines began to emerge, but she wasn’t entirely convinced they captured what she wanted to express. That changed when her son’s friend Aidan Tauber was invited to help make sense of the original vocal ideas. His interpretation brought the underlying feeling of love into focus, giving Goffin and her son a clearer direction for the remaining verses.

That collaborative spirit runs throughout “Promise Yourself.” Goffin and her son continued developing the lyrics together, while she also introduced a spoken-word passage recorded on her phone and placed within the song. It adds another personal dimension, reflecting on the experience of trying to make something fit where it never belonged and learning to accept the time spent along the way.

Musically, the track carries a dreamy, transporting quality, with shades of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You,” alongside hints of Pink Floyd and Neil Young. Yet its message is far from gloomy. Instead, “Promise Yourself” gradually reveals itself as a meditative anthem about choosing to celebrate life, appreciating the beauty of an evening and stepping outside the mental spaces that can sometimes keep us isolated. It encourages listeners to reconnect with the people and experiences waiting beyond their own thoughts.

The recording also reflects Goffin’s instinctive relationship with music-making. Written by Louise Goffin, Hayden Wells and Aidan Tauber, the song was recorded at Sunset Sound. Goffin contributes piano and guitar, Wells handles guitar and bass, while Charlie Faragher provides the drums. The result brings together their contributions in a way that supports the song’s reflective character without losing its sense of warmth.

There is also something particularly special about the family connection behind the creative process. Music has always been part of Goffin’s home life, from growing up surrounded by songwriting to raising her own family with instruments and musical ideas always within reach. Sharing unfinished songs, discussing favourite lines and exchanging recording advice are all part of that everyday environment. It’s a creative relationship where inspiration can come from anyone who happens to be in the house.

As a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer, Goffin brings together instinct, experience and a genuine curiosity about the recording process. Her time at Nashville’s Blackbird Academy helped her recognise just how much studio knowledge she had already absorbed during childhood. She continues to write and release new music while working towards her album, and also leads the Goffin & King Foundation, which brings emerging songwriters together for retreats in inspiring locations.

“Promise Yourself” feels like a reminder worth keeping close. Its journey from playful late-night improvisation to a thoughtful, uplifting song gives it a personal foundation, while its message reaches well beyond the circumstances that inspired it. Louise Goffin has created something that encourages listeners to pause, let go of what no longer fits and make room for the good things still waiting outside.
