Sometimes love does not arrive with a neat ending. Sometimes it shows up when everything else feels unstable, and the only reasonable response is to turn the guitars up and hold on a little tighter. Shawn Brown captures exactly that feeling on “What a Way to Go,” a soaring rock single that transforms doomed romance and uncertainty into something loud, emotional, and wonderfully cathartic.
Released via Bootney Lee Records, the Portland-based singer-songwriter’s latest track finds him leaning fully into the rock side of his musical personality. Produced by Grecco Buratto, whose work includes collaborations with Shakira, Tegan and Sara, and Lionel Richie, the song is built around driving rhythms, powerful guitars and a huge chorus that practically demands to be shouted back.
At the centre of “What a Way to Go” is a young relationship struggling against circumstances that seem determined to pull it apart. Brown does not present love as some magical escape from reality. Instead, the song places two people in the middle of pressure, instability and the complications of modern life, asking what happens when staying together feels like an act of defiance.
That tension gives the track its emotional punch. The verses carry the weight of uncertainty, while the bigger moments explode with the kind of energy that makes you want to roll the car windows down and sing along, even if you don’t know all the words yet. A bittersweet quality runs beneath the adrenaline, making the song feel both triumphant and slightly reckless.
Musically, Brown and his band deliver plenty of firepower. Ben Landsverk’s piano and Wurlitzer, Jeff Langston’s bass and Ned Failing’s drums create a sturdy foundation, while Buratto expands the arrangement with electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin and backing vocals. The result is rich without losing its punch, giving Brown plenty of space to deliver the song with his unmistakable vocal character.
Recorded at The Trench in Portland with engineer Gregg Williams, the track also benefits from a team that clearly understands how to make its emotional weight translate into sound. Tiago Becker handled the mix, with Juan Garcia Petri mastering the final recording.
There is something particularly fitting about “What a Way to Go” arriving at this stage of Brown’s career. After stepping away from music for almost a decade before returning in 2021, he has steadily developed a catalogue that refuses to stay in one box. Soul, R&B, roots rock, folk and guitar-driven pop have all found their way into his work, with recent releases and his Into the Furious Light EP showing an artist increasingly comfortable embracing his full range.
“What a Way to Go” feels like a natural escalation of that journey. It is bigger, louder and more immediate, but the emotional honesty that has shaped Brown’s work remains firmly intact. He takes something deeply personal and turns it into a song that feels built for a room full of people going through their own version of the same chaos.
And that may be the track’s greatest strength. It does not promise that everything will work out. It simply says that when the world starts falling apart, sometimes you keep loving, keep fighting, and keep singing anyway.
