Clandestina thrives in motion. The nomadic rapper’s latest EP, Politically Erect, feels shaped by borders crossed and cultures absorbed, a six-track project that’s as politically sharp as it is sonically restless.
Opener “Don’t Quit” sets the tone with intent. Weaponised Southern trap rhythms meet bright piano stabs, providing a kinetic backdrop for rapid, incendiary lines tackling systemic oppression in the United States. Moving on to “Man-Made” which pulls the focus toward gender politics and modern intimacy. Built on a syncopated piano motif and muscular drum pattern, the track interrogates hookup culture without resorting to easy blame. Instead, Clandestina leans into nuance, examining how societal expectations shape behaviour on both sides.
The EP’s centrepiece arrives with “Hymns to a Child I Love,” a strikingly minimal moment delivered a cappella largely. Follow-up “Soldiers” continues the stripped-back approach, with vocal effects that mimic military announcements, subverting the trope of war propaganda by broadcasting messages of compassion instead.
“Bigger Than Paris” reintroduces urgency. A looping guitar figure, evocative of the melodic hip-hop palette associated with Juice WRLD, runs beneath snare-heavy percussion as Clandestina lists natural disasters across continents. The message is unmistakable: the climate crisis is global, and indifference is no longer an option.
Closer “Landet Istid” injects rhythmic relief. Driven by syncopated salsa grooves and deep piano bass notes, the track unfolds entirely in Swedish, Clandestina’s native tongue. Its boundary-blurring approach to rhythm and language carries echoes of the global pop experimentation championed by Rosalía.
At just six tracks, Politically Erect is a compact but potent statement. Clandestina merges personal storytelling with global consciousness, crafting an EP that feels urgent without sacrificing musicality. The result is politically charged hip-hop that refuses to stay confined to one place, geographically or creatively.
