ELDR’s “Defender (KJS Remix)” Is a Haunting and Ethereal Journey

ELDR has a way of making music feel like a world you step into, and her latest release, “Defender (KJS Remix)” is no exception. Following the critical buzz around her 2024 single Deer Skin, the rising artist—known offstage as award-winning film composer Marina Elderton—returns with a track that is as hypnotic as it is cinematic.

Right from the opening notes, “Defender (KJS Remix)” pulls you under its spell. Built on lo-fi textures, atmospheric guitar, and pulsing rhythms, the remix reframes the very first song ELDR ever wrote under the project. It’s a collaboration with Norwegian producer Knut Jonas Sellevold (aka King Knut), and together they’ve sculpted something that feels intimate and vast all at once. Her ethereal vocals float above the soundscape with a haunting fragility, reminiscent of Portishead or Björk, yet undeniably her own.

Thematically, “Defender” dives deep into the psyche. ELDR explains that the Mirror Man in the accompanying video represents the parts of ourselves we suppress—the inconvenient truths we bury to survive. As the cloaked rider Chevalier ventures through a surreal, gothic forest in director Philip James McGoldrick’s visual reimagining of Alice in Wonderland, the story mirrors a journey of self-awakening. The unmasking at the end becomes a symbolic act of radical self-acceptance.

What’s most striking about “Defender (KJS Remix)” is how it balances the personal with the mythic. The track aches with vulnerability while the video stretches that ache into a haunting allegory. It’s music and storytelling in perfect dialogue—a reminder of why Elderton has been celebrated not only in music circles but across film and television as well. If Deer Skin was her breakthrough, Defender is her reaffirmation: ELDR is building something remarkable.
