Australian sister duo Charm of Finches has delivered a mesmerizing and bewitching new album, “Marlinchen In The Snow,” showcasing their intricate folk-pop that seamlessly intertwines grace and melancholy. Comprised of Mabel and Ivy Windred-Wornes, the duo’s evocative music has garnered widespread acclaim, earning recognition and accolades from the Australian Folk Music Awards and Music Victoria, among others.
Following the critical success of their third full-length album, “Wonderful Oblivion,” released in 2021 through New York-based label AntiFragile Music, Charm of Finches embarked on extensive tours through the UK, Europe, and Canada in 2022/23. Their accolades include winning the Australian Folk Music Awards for Best Folk Album in 2022 and being recognized as the Best Contemporary Folk Act by Music Victoria in 2021. Additionally, their music has been nominated twice for the prestigious Australian Music Prize, solidifying their position as influential voices in the folk music scene.
In February 2023, the sisters ventured to rural Nova Scotia to record their fourth studio album, “Marlinchen In The Snow,” with acclaimed Canadian producer Daniel Ledwell (known for his work with artists such as Jenn Grant and Oh Pep!). Drawing inspiration from the frozen beauty of the landscape and the transient nature of their life on the road, the album takes influence from the Grimm’s fairy tale “The Juniper Tree,” infusing its haunting themes into their music. Mabel shared, “It’s a haunting tale of how Marlinchen discovers the death of her stepbrother at the hands of her mother. This found its way into one of our songs. There’s lots of symbolism in the story but really, it’s about female strength and intuition – overcoming obstacles led by your inner voice – a theme throughout the album.”
Charm of Finches’ music has resonated with listeners worldwide, earning placements on Spotify’s coveted playlists such as Lush + Ethereal, Infinite Acoustic, noir, and Fresh Folk. With their upcoming UK tour scheduled from May to August, along with additional dates in Canada, the duo continues to captivate audiences with their evocative and enchanting sound.
“Marlinchen In The Snow” stands as a testament to Charm of Finches’ ability to craft compelling narratives and evoke a sense of wonder and melancholy through their seamless blood harmonies. The album promises to offer a captivating and introspective musical journey, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the timeless allure of the duo’s folk-pop artistry.
