Ava DuVernay’s Latest Film, “Origin,” Receives Praise from Peers

Renowned filmmaker Ava DuVernay has garnered praise from her peers for her latest movie, “Origin.” Celebrities such as Danielle Brooks, Sarunas Jackson, Gabrielle Dennis, Laz Alonso, and Jeffrey Wright have commended DuVernay for her work. Despite the film’s somber tone, DuVernay radiated joy as she celebrated its release. “Origin” premiered on December 8 and has since become a popular topic among cinephiles.

Based on Isabel Wilkerson’s bestselling book, “Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents,” the film delves into the personal journey of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor portrays Wilkerson in the biographical film, which begins with the tragic murder of Trayvon Martin in 2012. DuVernay draws a parallel between racism and India’s caste system, exploring cultural experiences ranging from the Holocaust to the Slave Trade. The film also examines the connections between Nazi Germany and American laws. While “Origin” tackles weighty subject matter, audiences have applauded DuVernay’s efforts.

Last night, DuVernay and her esteemed guests gathered at the Sunset Tower Hotel in Hollywood, California. The event, hosted by Threads, not only celebrated the success of “Origin,” but also recognized Black actors who are contenders this award season. Among the attendees were Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Samuel L. Jackson and his wife LaTayna Ricardson Jackson, Colan Domingo from “The Color Purple,” Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, Sarunas Jackson from “Insecure,” Jeffrey Wright from “American Fiction,” David Oyelowo, Laz Alonso, Gabrielle Dennis, and legendary actor Glynn Turman, among others.
